Imagined Lines @ Light House, Wolverhampton

Imagined Lines by Matthew Hammond

October 3rd - November 7th 2008

Matthew Hammond’s exhibition is a selection of photographs from four bodies of work about the urban landscape and our association with it. This collection documents the disparate social areas of one city which could be reflected in any major city.

British Landscapes, the most recent body of work in the collection, features very specific cities and sites. Matthew chose these places because they are sites that are both harrowing and banal at the same time. They are of locations such as Cromwell Street, Hillsborough and Pont de L’Alma underpass in Paris - harrowing because of the events that once took place there, but banal because they are also merely everyday locations.

Jane Stockdale, Kabukicho

The penultimate slice of the PURE series focuses on photography, comprising five snappers' takes on the meaning of "journey". Two standouts are Jane Stockdale and Matthew Hammond. Stockdale's images are hedonistic fun, capturing the colorful atmosphere of global festivals (and famous faces such as Iggy Pop and Kaiser Chiefs). Hammond keeps closer to home with his British Landmarks series, which eschews picture-postcard destinations in favor of Dunblane Primary School and 25 Cromwell Street, with street snapshots taken through the window of a bus.
